Nigeria Government Debunks Popular National Honours List

The list of nominees for national honours circulated by various online media outlets is false, according to the Federal Government’s statement on Monday.

Numerous names purportedly on the list of Nigerians who will get national awards were extensively published in the media over the weekend.

However, the nominations have come under fire, especially given the quality of those contending for honors. The candidates list has been trending online.

The Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs’ Director of Press, Julie Jacobs, issued a statement on behalf of the government disputing the list and announcing that it would be released at the proper time and by the proper channel.

She pleaded with the public to disregard the list because it was an attempt by overeager reporters to spread false information.

The statement: “The attention of the Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs has been drawn to a purported list of nominees for National Honours being circulated by some online media organisations.

“While it is true that President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR, will be conferring National Honours on deserving Nigerians and friends of Nigeria on 11th October, 2022, the authentic list of nominees is yet to be released to the public. The Federal Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs will publish the list at the appropriate time and medium.

“Members of the public are hereby enjoined to discountenance the list in circulation as it is an attempt by overzealous reporters whose aim is to break news even when such news is fake.”
