Many Feared Dead As Gunmen Attack Zamfara Mosque
Gunmen are said to have killed at least 11 persons in an attack on a mosque in the Ruwan Jema hamlet in the Bukkuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
Salisu Ibrahim, a local, told Channels Television that the terrorists broke into the neighborhood at 1:50 pm on Friday, September 23, and went directly to the neighborhood’s main mosque where people had gathered for prayer.
They then started shooting at the worshipers, killing 11 people and injuring many more.
They also raided the neighborhood and are suspected of killing several locals, though the exact number is yet unknown.
“The total number of people killed is not yet certain, except the 11 people killed inside the mosque.”
Despite the fact that those who survived the catastrophe believed that 15 people had died, it came out that four of the 15 were only unconscious and not actually deceased.
On September 24, at 7 p.m., the 11 people confirmed dead had all been interred.
Another resident of Bukkuyum, Abdullahi Mohammed, said the attack was suspected to be a reprisal by the terrorists as the community’s local vigilante popularly called Yan Sakai reportedly killed two of the terrorists earlier.
SP Mohammed Shehu, the Zamfara Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, acknowledged the incident but said it was unclear how many persons were killed and injured.
Shehu said; “The report about the attack on Ruwan Jema Village in Bukkuyum LGA is very sketchy at the moment due to the poor road and communication networks caused by the remote Nature of the area.
“However, the Police Tactical team led by the DPO (Divisional Police Officer) Bukkuyum/vigilante men were immediately mobilised and deployed to the village, for an on-the-spot assessment.”
