At London BMI Awards, Tems Receives The Renowned “Impact Prize”

Temilade Openiyi, Afrobeats sensational singer and songwriter, better known by her stage name “Tems,” added to her already stellar year by winning one of the most prestigious prizes at the annual BMI London Awards.

She was awarded the Impact Prize, which recognizes and rewards notable UK and European lyricists, composers, and music publishers.

Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), a performance rights company with offices in the UK, presents the BMI Film & TV Awards every year to recognize the work of songwriters, composers, and music publishers across a variety of genres.

Tems shares the award with British singer-songwriter RAYE and British-Nigerian singer-songwriter Arlo Parks. The BMI Impact Award is presented to a songwriter, producer, or composer in recognition of their artistry, originality, and influence on the direction of music.

“This year’s Impact Award goes to @Temsbaby for her ground-breaking artistry, creative vision and impact on the future of music! Congratulations! We are excited to see what’s next! #BMILondonAwards.”

Tems had a meeting and a selfie with English singer-songwriter Elle Goulding, who had won the BMI President’s Award. Along with Wizkid and his producer P2J, she received a BMI accreditation for the smash hit Essence, which was recognized for songwriting in the Pop Category.

The remix featuring Justin Bieber and “Essence” were both recognized for the success of the song.

The BMI Impact Award adds to Tems’ record-breaking streak in 2022, which already includes her talents to Wizkid’s “Essence,” Drake’s “Fountain,” Future’s “Wait For U,” and Beyonce’s “Move,” which broke several Billboard chart records.

Tems has won two BET Awards and has been nominated for an MTV Video Music Award. Along with fellow Afrobeats sensation Wizkid and American pop star Justin Beiber, she was also a candidate for the Best Global Music Performance Award at the 64th Grammys for the worldwide hit song “Essence.”

She had an appearance on the soundtrack of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, the most recent film from Marvel Studios, in 2022.
